PICKING THE RIGHT ONE
Hannah suggests auditioning the DJs and bands on your list before making a decision. That way, you can see which band or DJ has the vibe and energy you're looking for.
If you can't catch their gigs, ask for a recording of their performances. Better yet, see if they have a video of their performances so you can see and hear them in action.
It is also advisable to interview the bands and DJs. Find out how long the band has been together, how many weddings they have performed at, how much they charge, if they have references or testimonials from past clients, etc.
Don't forget to ask candidates for their playlist or repertoire to have an idea if they'll be able to perform the genre of music or specific songs you'd like.
If you're going to get a DJ, Hannah recommends going for established names even though it may cost more. For DJs, I recommend those with vast experience working with corporate companies who do huge events. Don't try to save a few hundred by getting any DJ. You may end up paying more in the end if they're not equipped to support you on your big day.
A GOOD BRIEF
To ensure things go according to plan, brief your band or DJ thoroughly. Give them a list of your favourite singers and bands so they can suggest a playlist. Also provide a list of genres or songs you don't want in the playlist. For example, it would be inappropriate to play a raunchy hip hop tune if you have a lot of conservative guests.
